Class Descriptions

  • MARVY AND MIGHTY MIX CLASSES (Combination Classes)

    These classes offer a combination of tap, ballet, jazz, and creative dance with the time split up each lesson to cover these subjects. Generally, two dance subjects each week will be covered, but by the end of the dance season, dancers have a very good understanding of the basic principles in each of the disciplines. The classes place much emphasis on flexibility, endurance, dance etiquette, poise, grace and balance. Also taught in this class are the basic dance elements, including shape, time, energy and space with the addition of discipline, technique, and performance skills and opportunity. Combination classes are offered according to age and ability, and this is where most beginning students should begin.

  • SUPERHEROES BOYS' CLASS

    This class is directed to young boys three to six years old, and is a hip hop/tumbling class JUST for BOYS! Flexibility, strength, conditioning, locomotor skills, agility, and rhythm will be taught through the genres of hip hop and tumbling. A Superhero theme or character will be explored each month, and even obstacle courses and prop use will be incorporated into this dynamic class.

  • COMPOSITE JAZZ: (Jazz Classes)

    These classes are offered to older students at the beginning level; younger students interested in jazz should take the combination class. Jazz class will emphasize timing, flexibility, endurance and technique. Jazz styles taught will include traditional jazz, lyrical jazz, and modern jazz. Students will learn pirouettes, chaine turns, kicks, leaps, splits, and much more!

  • BALLET CLASSES

    Ballet is considered to be the basis for all types and styles of dance, and is absolutely required of anyone interested in any sort of future in dance. These classes offer ballet technique at the barre, across the floor work and combinations, terminology, and lyrical ballet. New beginning students younger than eight interested in ballet should enroll in a combination class, and these classes are primarily offered to Shaw Dance Team dancers. Team ballet technique classes will not perform, but recreation beginning ballet class will have performance opportunities.

  • MAGNIFICENT MOVE

    This new class is geared for dancers with AT LEAST TWO YEARS of previous training in a Marvy Mix as well as a Mighty Mix class. Focus will be ballet and jazz technique- splits, jumps, leaps, turns, body movements and so much FUN!!!!

  • HIP HOP CLASSES

    This class will teach students the latest movement in street dance, funk, and hip-hop. This is a great movement class that involves a great deal of energy, but students interested in more technical dance should enroll in a jazz class. Most students studying hip-hop also study more traditional forms of dance. This class does offer performance opportunities and no previous experience of any kind is required to take the hip- hop class. Boys and girls are welcome!!! This class is extremely fun and fills quickly. Hip Hop I classes are for beginning students in hip hop and Hip Hop II classes are for students with one or more years in hip hop.

  • HIPPITY HOP CLASS

    This super fun and energetic class features hip hop, flexibility, rhythm and timing, footwork, torso movement and isolations in a hip hop class just for little ones- clean movement, clean lyrics and so much fun and development!!!

  • BOYS' HIP HOP/BREAK DANCE

    Break dance, hip hop, strength, conditioning, tumbling, stalls, core work, balance, and rhythm and timing are just a few of the variety of skills covered in this energetic class. This class is athletic, taught just for boys- Boys LOVE this class!

  • TRU CRU

    (Boys’ hip hop/ break dance TEAM) This team will feature break dance and hip hop for boys with previous experience who wish to compete in a couple of spring competitions. Boys will stretch, condition, and progress with break dance skills and steps along with hip hop combinations.

  • RHYTHMIC TAPPERS

    (Tap Team) This team is for tap dancers with some previous experience. This class will emphasize rhythm and timing, tap skills and steps using the Al Gilbert tap technique. This a terrific addition to help add versatility to dancers studying other disciplines, and for those interested in pursuing more to enhance theatrical dancing capabilities.

  • SHAW DANCE ALL STARS!!!

    (Special Needs Dance) These classes will be geared to children, teens and adults with special needs. Curriculum will involve ballet, jazz, creative movement, locomotor skills, rhythm, timing, dance elements and performing opportunities will be offered.

  • TUMBLING/ACRO

    This class will place emphasis on flexibility, strength, endurance, ACRO, and basic conditioning. Students will be challenged and coached on an individual basis starting with the beginning level and building up, as each student is ready. This class is HIGHLY recommended for competition dancers and will not perform. Many students at Shaw Dance Studio take this class in addition to regular dance classes.

    • Tumble Tots: This beginning tumbling class features a great warm-up, stretch, core focus, and then students will learn tuck position, forward and backward rolls, straddle rolls, headstands, handstands, cartwheels, back bends, bridges, class cooperation, and much more!!!

    • Tumble Bugs and Flippers: Beginning level tumbling class with focus on stretching, conditioning, strength, cartwheels, round-offs, back bends, walk-overs, hand stands, front and back extensions, front limbers, etc.

    • Bounders: This level I + class will further advance the previous skills, but participants MUST already have his/her standing backbend, and rock up, as well as kick over.

    • Springers: This level II class will primarily focus on limbers and aerials with other progressive tumbling skills. Must be able to execute cartwheels, round-offs, unassisted back bends, and unassisted kick-overs, and rock ups.

  • ACRO TEAM

    This team is set for more advanced dancers and tumblers, and will combine classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics, and its use of acrobatics in a dance context. There are five acro teams- Extendies, Flexies, Bendies, Stretchies and Pixies. Members are chosen by invitation and by audition.

    These teams will perform and compete. Acro team member MUST be enrolled in a competitive Company, or another dance class.

  • INSPIRED COMPANY

    This team is for the dancer with at least one year of dance experience and a placement class is required. This team will learn jazz technique, ballet technique, hip hop, theatrical dance, and teamwork and will compete on the beginning or novice level. Tuition prices include extra practices held throughout the year. Dancers, with the exception of Sugars, are required to take the additional ballet class, which is scheduled into the listed practice times, and tuition prices include extra practices held throughout the year. Inspired Company members will also learn and incorporate FTI training, which provides emphasis on alignment, flexibility, and strength. These teams will compete on the beginning and intermediate level. All team Company classes begin immediately after June auditions.

  • EXPRESSIVE COMPANY

    This team is an intermediate level dance team is for students with at least two years of dance experience and a placement class is required. Students will study jazz, ballet technique, hip-hop and teamwork. Student are required to take the additional ballet class, which is scheduled into the listed practice times, and tuition prices include extra practices held throughout the year. These teams will compete on the beginning and intermediate level. Expressive Company classes will begin in June, immediately after auditions, and this team attends class two nights per week. Expressive Company members will also learn and incorporate FTI training, which provides emphasis on alignment, flexibility, and strength.

  • ARTISTIC COMPANY

    Artistic Company members audition for class placement each June. Dancers are placed according to age and ability, and dancers study jazz in all of its disciplines, ballet technique, and hip-hop. These teams will compete and perform on the high intermediate and advanced level. Artistic. members are also required to enroll in ballet technique, stretch classes, FTI, modern/contemporary classes, and A.C. Hip Hop Teams, and this group will have some extra practices. All tuition for jazz dances, hip-hop, ballet technique and any necessary extra practices is included in the listed monthly tuition.

  • ELITE ARTISTIC COMPANY

    These dancers are chosen from the highest scores at auditions. This is an extra class for Artistic Company members, and will require some extra practices. These dancers will be challenged on the advanced and professional levels, and these dancers will study jazz, contemporary and modern dance.

  • COMPANY

    This invitation-only performance company is designed to take our very advanced dancers age 17 and older to the next level by challenging them in choreography and performance. This team will do some community outreach, will work to get sponsors, and will travel and compete on the national convention circuit.

  • POINTE

    This ballet class is offered through invitation only for high intermediate and advanced ballet students wishing to further pursue the study of ballet. Pointe students must concurrently enroll in a ballet technique class. This class will further develop ballet technique, terminology, turnout, proper body alignment, and flexibility.
